An Active Threat is defined by Phillips ATS Training as: Any act of violence toward a single person, or group of people that threatens a life, or provides the risk for serious bodily injury. This is to include the use of any weapon or empty hand strike, choke, kick, etc.
Phillips ATS Training has been designed by Urban Defense Krav Maga Head Instructor, Colby Phillips to improve decision-making and provide the physical skills necessary to help you survive Active Threats in various areas of daily life.
This six-week course offers a variety of solutions to many of the Active Threats faced today.
• Active Threat Week 1: Active Shooter (Schools, College Campuses, etc.)
• Active Threat Week 2: Active Shooter (Workplace)
• Active Threat Week 3: Active Shooter (Public areas - Malls, Parks, Public Events, etc.)
• Active Threat Week 4: Vehicle Attacks
• Active Threat Week 5: Workplace Violence (Non-Shooting)
• Active Threat Week 6: Personal use of improvised weapons
No experience necessary for any of the above courses offered. This system is designed to take an individual with zero knowledge of any of the Active Threats and help them build self-protection and decision-making skills. These courses are the beginning steps of training and UDKM advanced training should be sought after completion of any course.

Our adult classes are for everyone regardless of experience or fitness level. If you're looking to build a strong mind and body you have found the place to start. We will help you develop through every stage of the process, from learning the basic Krav Maga techniques to becoming a Black Belt. If you are looking to get lean and toned we will help you along the way with that as well. Our workouts are a fit for everyone regardless of fitness level, as they can be modified for the novice or the advanced.

Our youth classes are designed to build confidence, strengthen mental focus, improve self discipline and promote an active lifestyle, while maintaining a fun and respectful environment. Children will develop strong hand-eye coordination, agility and the strength to protect themselves if necessary. Hands on techniques are taught to always be a last resort and all other means of de-esclation should be tried first.

Colby has been training in Krav Maga for many years and has found the simplicity of the techniques effective and easy for everyone to pick up. His knowledge base is not just in how to defeat an attacker but also situational awareness, verbal and physical cues that may point to danger, what to do when faced with multiple attackers and the threat of weapons.
Colby has been teaching under Master Alain Cohen and affiliated with The Krav Maga Federation of America since 2013 and trains on a regular basis to ensure that his students get the best possible instruction available.

As a Military/Law Enforcement professional who has trained in various martial arts and forms of self defense, I’ve found that Krav Maga is a no-nonsense approach to obtain awareness and confidence in today’s world. I have yet to find a more easy to learn or practical form of self-defense.

Yes. UDKM incorporates extensive ground-fighting techniques into its curriculum. While we don’t encourage taking an assailant to the ground, during a confrontation there is a high probability that the fight may end up on the ground. We don’t train for submissions or tap-out, our training will emphasize ending the confrontation as quickly as possible by executing joint dislocations or worse.
*As with all techniques covered in your training, it is the responsibility of each individual to understand and abide by the laws on the use of reasonable and excessive force and disengage once the threat of danger has been eliminated.
Yes and no. We do not have beverage or snack machines so bring your own beverage or snacks to class. (No alcohol permitted on premises).
As your training progresses, you will have the option to participate in light sparring sessions. To participate in these sparring sessions you will be required to purchase your own headgear, shin guards, sparring gloves and a mouth guard. Men are highly encouraged to wear a cup (groin protection). You may also wear chest a protector if desired.

Wear clothing that you don’t mind getting pulled, stretched or otherwise dirty. You will sweat in class so light but strong clothing is recommended. Generally a heavy cotton t-shirt and sweat pants will suffice. Women are encouraged to wear a sports style bra under their shirt.
You are permitted to wear knee, wrist or elbow wraps/pads etc… as long as they don’t have a hard plastic or metal shell.
Outdoor shoes are not permitted on the mats. You must have a separate pair of wrestling/mat shoes to train on the mats. This is to protect our mats from damage and to help keep them clean. You may also wear socks or you may go barefoot.
*When you become an active student, you are required to wear the UDKM standard uniform which consists of a black UDKM t-shirt (which you will be given) and black long sweat or running pants.
No. Krav Maga is for everyone. Krav Maga was designed for anyone to learn self defense quickly and easily regardless of your physical stature or those who have no self defense training. Krav Maga utilizes basic and instinctive techniques and teaches the use of these techniques in advanced applications to neutralize the threat quickly.
You’ll find your training at Urban Defense Krav Maga to be both fun and rewarding leaving you with a greater sense of self confidence and awareness.
You can obtain your KMF Technical Training Passport and the Annual stamp and ID card by clicking on the image/link below. The Annual stamp and ID are required and must accompany your Passport on day of testing.
Yes. Belts are awarded to help instructors track and gauge a students progress. While it is not a requirement at Urban Defense Krav Maga, it is encouraged that active students strive to master each level of the curriculum and participate in belt testing before moving to the next level.

Krav Maga uses the following belt ranking system:
1.) Yellow belt
2.) Orange belt
3.) Green belt
4.) Blue belt
5.) Brown belt
6.) Black belt (dans 1 – 10)
Belt testing is only performed by Certified KMFA Instructors holding a Black belt or higher that have passed a course for instructors supervised and approved by a certified Krav Maga coach as defined by the Israel Sport law.
Yes. You must fill out a Release and Waiver of Liability form before participating in classes. Students under the age of 18 must have a parent/guardian signature prior to participating in class.

Yes and no. Krav Maga is not a martial art but a self-defense system. There are no katas or choreographed routines. Krav Maga utilizes simultaneous counter-offensives using ‘Retzev’ (continuous combat motion) as its core foundation. Krav Maga, much like MMA incorporates aspects from other martial art systems into its curriculum. Krav Maga utilizes techniques from Boxing, Wrestling, Judo, Muay Thai and Jiu Jitsu but Krav Maga has no rules. Krav Maga teaches instinctive defense techniques against armed and unarmed assailants, both standing and from the ground and also teaches the use of improvised weapons.
A very good question that we hear all the time but before I tell you what you’ll learn, let me first respond by saying this… Depending on your commitment you will learn a wide range of skills and techniques. We will teach you many things but its up to you to put fourth the time and effort to train on a regular basis. As with any martial art or self-defense system, your training should be a way-of-life, not something you do occasionally to pass the time. We understand that everyone is busy juggling careers, kids, school etc… and we’re not saying you need to train 5 days a week or even 3 days a week (although it helps) but it should be something you’re serious about and you should make every effort to train on a regular basis.
As a general overview, you will be taught and train in some of the following:
Situational awareness (i.e., avoidance, when and how to escalate and/or de-escalate)
How to strike on many angles using fists, elbows, open hand, forearms and fingers
How to kick on many angles using feet, shin and knees
Defense against strikes
Defense against kicks
Rolls and Falls (trust us, these are important)
Offensive and defensive techniques from the ground (e.g, strikes, kicks, chokes, escapes, arm-bars, knee/ankle locks, small joint manipulation etc…)
Defense against multiple forms of chokes (front, side and rear)
Defense against multiple forms of wrist grabs
Defense against multiple forms of headlocks
Defense against multiple forms of “bear hugs” (front and rear)
Defense against various gun threats (front, side and rear)
Defense against long weapon threats (e.g., stick, pipe, bat, machete etc…)
Defense against multiple forms of knife threats
Defense against single and multiple attackers
Remember, we want and will teach you everything you need to help protect yourself and your loved ones but in the end its really up to you. You get out of it only what you put into it.
Krav Maga is used by the Israeli Defense and Security Forces. It is also used by Military, Law Enforcement Agencies, Corrections Services, Special Security personnel, Anti-terrorists organizations, Air Marshals and civilians of all ages, men and women both young and old.
Getting started is really very simple, it just takes few steps and your first class is FREE.
1.) Give us a call at (540) 683-4374 to schedule a time for you to come in. We do this to avoid overcrowding classes.
2.) Fill out the Release and Waiver of Liability form. It can be found further down in the FAQ section. You can print and fill it out and bring with you or fill one out at class. (Students under the age of 18 require a parent/guardian signature to participate in class)
3.) Join in on the class. All of our students and instructors are very friendly and helpful and will ease you into the process.
The basic class structure consists of the following:
1.) Brief warm-up to help get the muscles ready to work
2.) Light stretching from head to toe
3.) Brief cardio/strength building exercises
4.) Self Defense Tactics of the day
